Sultanahmet Square is one of the most important squares of İstanbul. At the Byzantine era it was known as the Hippodrome. "The hippodrome" means that the horses of riding at the square. In the Ottoman period, it was called the horse Square here.Steam baths, temples, religious, cultural, administrative and social centers that had settled in the vicinity. The most important monuments of İstanbul, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, underground Cistern, Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum here, is around the Hippodrome.
